How to Practice Self CareAug 08, 2022
Something I've learned throughout my life is that self care is the most important tool to stay happy and healthy–both physically and mentally! Even though it's underrated, self care is sustainable, simple, and proven to give every aspect of your life a boost. Knowing how to practice self care is a crucial life skill, one you can't pass up!
If you're anything like me, you might feel like you just don't have the time for it. The truth is, self care is easier than you think. It's not always expensive trips or an hour long routine; it can be as simple as picking up your favorite book!
Here's how to practice self care:
1) Eat healthily and mindfully
Too often we eat our meals while multitasking, denying ourselves the experience of a nourishing meal. Would you work on the computer when having dinner with a loved one? Treat yourself with that same level of respect, and allow yourself to enjoy a meal without any distractions!
2) Keep track of your accomplishments
While there are great benefits to a “to-do” list, we should also recognize the things we’ve done. At the end of the day, make a list (either mental or write it out) of the productive things you’ve done that day. Did you nurture a relationship? Do the laundry? Complete a work assignment? No matter how small, you deserve a pat on the back–you deserve it!
3) Express gratitude
Just as it’s beneficial to keep track of what we’ve done, it’s also good to notice what we have. Keep a journal by your bed, and note the things that you feel lucky to have. Everything from clean sheets to a good friend is worth noting!
What people say about exercise and endorphins is true; getting active increases feelings of happiness. Find a form of physical activity that works for you. Enjoy a Sunday morning hike, try a new yoga class online, or go on a bike ride. Keeping your body active consistently is key!
5) Create something
Whether it’s a batch of brownies or a drawing, getting creative helps us to feel mindful and productive! I always feel fulfilled after finishing a project, no matter how small!
